In 2018, the 8 Series returned to the BMW lineup after an absence of nearly 20 years. The successor to the 6 Series, the 8 Series is larger, more powerful and more luxurious. In short, everything about it is noticeably top-end. That said, it was only a matter of time before the outrageous minds of BMW's M division got their hands on it and took things to the next level.
More power. A lot more. The 8 Series is barely a year old, and already our favorite premium motor company is treating fans to a high-performance M variant, with a burly power plant under the hood and world-class agility that would make Jordan Howard proud. In addition to the upgraded engine and suspension, the M8 sports unique dramatic styling elements, high-performance tires, and available gigantic carbon-ceramic brakes to reign it all in.
While BMW's are famous for luxury—and the M8 is no exception—the name of the game here is performance. Under the hood, the M8 receives mountains of motivation from a BMW M 4.4-liter TwinPower turbo V-8 behemoth that produces 600 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 553 pound-feet of torque at just 1,800 rpm. (Opting for the Competition version equips the M8 with an extra 17 horsepower.) Unsurprisingly, acceleration is ludicrous, as the M8 rockets from a dead stop to 60 mph in under 3.2 seconds.
Gear changes are handled by an eight-speed M STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with Drivelogic, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and Launch Control. The M xDrive all-wheel drive system is equipped standard. And, for those Bethlehem and Easton PA drivers looking for a true white-knuckle track experience, the M8 has a trick up its sleeve: a rear-wheel-drive-only setting.
However, without a way to control it, all that power is useless…also dangerous. Fortunately, the M8 features an M-tuned adaptive suspension system which includes an M-specific multi-link rear suspension, a double-wishbone multi-link aluminum front suspension, twin-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers, electronically controlled dampers, and upgraded bushings, swivel bars, and strut bars.
The M8 is governed at a top speed of 155 mph. However, that limit can be surpassed via the M Driver's package (up to 189 mph drag-limited). Should you opt for this, we recommend taking advantage of the free admission to a BMW Performance Center driving school that comes included with the package…Please.
